Welcome to Chattertown
Creating Chattertown has been an absorbing journey; I have found researching the stages and processes of language acquisition by babies and toddlers fascinating. Spending time trying out activities which support and develop language acquisition on my own son has convinced me of the value of a carefully planned and structured early years language class.
My background is in education and having studied English literature both for a BA (HONS) and a Masters, followed by a PGCE, I went on to teach English at secondary level for 10 years. Although I’d studied English language at undergraduate level, it was during my teaching career that I advanced my knowledge of how children acquire language, the processes and theories surrounding this subject, teaching English Language A-level. However, it wasn’t until I had my baby in 2012 that all this theory came alive and what had been interesting on paper suddenly became captivating when it was my own son developing and moving through the milestones. Of all the amazing things babies and toddlers learn to do, for me, the progress of my son’s language and our shared experience of being able to communicate more and more with one another has been the most thrilling.
During my maternity leave and the subsequent year, I attended many different baby and toddler classes and realised there was something missing from the range of classes available. Drawing from my experience in education I decided to embark on creating a class that I would have loved going to with my son. A year later Chattertown was born.
I hope to see you all soon.
‘I would recommend these classes for any parent looking to encourage their child’s speech and language.’
